Save the Date - 19 Sept 2018

This is it! I'm not going to talk about it any more. Join into the live webcast of the 2nd international GATE conference to find out what I am going to do, and then join us in doing something bold and disruptive, unbelievable and obvious.

Each of us can of course do our part as "consumers". We've been told to recycle, switch out old lightbulbs for new CF or LEDs... And some decide to take holidays without flying or buy an electric car. But as engineers, we know that consumer behaviour will not change the business as usual pathway enough to veer away from the high risk pathway.

Each of us can, using the Transition Engineering practices, do our part in our engineering positions. We can seek disruptive discoveries and carry out shift projects. We can be the pivot in our organisations. As GATE grows and more projects are done and teaching and professional development grow more available, and demand for Transition Engineering services takes off... our work will be essential to the change of course to a managed risk path. But will it be enough to get to the low risk future which we can achieve?

There are two things that are mission critical. 1) Fossil fuel production must decline fast enough to keep the accumulation of green house gas below 800 GtC. 2) Fossil fuel must be available in reliable supply chains over the next 200 years to meet the critical and essential needs of societies as they adapt and deal with the climate changes already initiated, and all of the re-development construction needed for adaptation to very low fossil fuel use. As an organisation, all of us together can do something that is on-mission. The purpose of The Big DO is our first meeting to set out the mission parameters and contribute our individual intellect and experience to examine this greatest of all disruptive discoveries.

What is the Big Do?

We can't reveal it until the launch, but let's just say you have never heard anyone come right out and say it before. You might be shocked. You might laugh. You might find it hard to believe. But, you won't be able to stop thinking about it. You will want to find a colleague to talk to about it. You will understand that it would work, and you will want to join in.

Transition Engineering is not another sustainability thing. GATE is not another climate action group. We are not calling on anybody else to do things they won't do. We are doers, and it is time to do big.
